CONSERVING OUR RICH HERITAGE

A heritage gallery has been set up in the ground floor hall of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST). The gallery was inaugurated on 29.01.10 by the General Manager, Central Railway.
The aim of the gallery is to:

  • Highlight the vision, pioneering effort and extreme courage of the founding fathers of the Railways.
  • Tell the story of the Railways, from the invention of the Steam Engine by James Watt, founding of The Great Indian Peninsular Railway in England in 1844 and The Great Indian Peninsular Railway in Mumbai in 1846, and the subsequent  development & expansion of the GIPR (now Central Railway).
  • Celebrate the CST building, a UNSESCO World Heritage site and to showcase the intricacy and fine detailing of F.W. Steven’s drawings of the Terminus building.
  • Exhibit the synergic growth of the City of Mumbai and the Railways.
  • Highlight the evolution of rolling stock. The gallery has a section on the Matheran Light Railway, an example of local enterprise in a Colonial environment.

A total of 39 panels on various themes are arranged in the sequence of development. Besides, there are 28 models, some of the interesting ones being:

  • Working model of the Steam Locomotive which hauled the first train on 16th april 1853.
