SIGNAL AND TELECOMMUNICATION
Signal and Telecommunication Department is responsible for installation and maintenance of Signalling system essential for the safe & speedy movement of trains.
Signalling is one of the most important parts of the many components which make up a railway system. Train movement safety depends on it and the control and efficient management of trains depends on them. Over the years many signalling and train control systems have been evolved. The journey started with very simple systems such as simple colored flags and semaphore arms to that today a highly technical and complex electrical and electronic systems
Telecommunication plays a pivotal role in ensuring safe train operation and utilizing the existing infrastructure capacity optimally. Indian Railways since the last 160 years have seen the various stages of technology development in the telecommunication field starting with the use of telegraph circuits using open wire as the media to voice circuits on cables and microwave systems and voice & data circuits on optical fiber cables and satellites to the modern IP based telecom networks for various applications.
In terms of the sophistication in Signalling and Telecommunication installations, Central Railway occupies the pride of place among the various Indian Railway systems.
