As a first step, a Transportation school was established. The first Area school was opened at BINA on the GIP Railway. This school functioned at BINA from 1926 to 1962. Under the Unified and Centralized training system, in conformity with the recommendations of Training School Committee 1961, the Railway School of Transportation at BINA was shifted to Bhusawal in 1962. Subsequently the name was changed as “Zonal Railway Training Institute” as per directives of Hon'ble Union Minister for Railways during his visit on September 3, 2003.

ZRTI Bhusawal is now the largest and premier Training Institute of Indian Railways and the first ever ZRTI to be awarded with International Standards of Quality Systems Certification IS:ISO 9001:1994 on 13th August 2001. ZRTI Bhusawal has implemented the upgraded version of IS:ISO 9001:2000 from 1st July 2003 and switched over to IS:ISO 9001:2015.
