1612 nos. of suburban services are running on Mumbai suburban area and 44 services are running in Pune- Lonavala section, adding to 1662 services in a day with 143 rakes holding.

1069 nos. of trains services are provided with 12 car rakes while 583 nos. of train services provided with 9 car. There are also 16 nos. of train services with 15 car rakes in Mainline. In mainline, trans-harbour and in Pune-Lonavala section, all services are running with 12 car rakes whereas in harbour line services are provided with 9 car rakes.

In Central Railway, there are six types of EMU stocks viz. Conventional DC rakes, AC EMU rakes, Retro AC rakes, AC-DC retrofitted rakes, and rakes fitted with BHEL and Siemens electrics.

Conventional DC EMUs works on 1500V DC traction system whereas AC and AC retro runs purely on 25000V AC traction system. Rakes fitted with BHEL and Siemens electrics and AC-DC retrofitted rakes works on both 1500V DC and 25000V AC traction system.

Suburban services provided by Central Railway covers a vast area in Mumbai suburban; stretching from CSTM to Kasara and to Khopoli whereas in harbour line it covers CSTM to Panvel and to Andheri. Trans-harbour services are running between Thane to Vashi and to Panvel.

Electrical department undertakes nominated schedule maintenance of these rakes in 3 carsheds at Kurla, Kalwa and Sanpada, while periodic overhauling carried out at Matunga workshop.

Problems arising in running train are attended online through a network of staff posted at nominated stations for achieving maximum punctuality in suburban services.
