Central Engineering Workshop, Central Railway, Manmad is a premier fabrication workshop of Indian Railways. Welded Girders of 12.2m, 18.3m, 24.4m, 30.5m, 45.7m, 61.0m, 76.2m span and many other non-standard steel girders for rail and road bridges are being fabricated by the workshop. Manmad workshop has a programmed capacity of 5000 MT for fabrication of Bridge Girders and history of delivering the girders within desired schedule.
The Workshop is headed by Chief Workshop Manager and is assisted by Assistant Workshop Manager, Assistant Personnel Officer, Workshop Assistant Accounts Officer (in-charge of the Associate Finance Office) and Senior Materials Manager (in-charge of the Stores Depot attached to the workshop).
The workshop has been certified with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 140001:2015, ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 50001:2018
BRIEF HISTORY OF WORKSHOP
1906: Engineering Workshop, Manmad was established in the year 1906 as a small unit for assembly of imported bridge components for the then GIPR and was initially known as Girder Shop.
1929: The Workshop started modification and reconditioning of released girders for major bridges. Subsequently, Smithy, Carpentry, Mechanical, Foundry and Bolts-Nuts-Rivets shops were also added to Girder Shop.
1939: During Second World War, the Workshop was engaged in production of war materials. After the war, normal activities were resumed in the Workshop.
1958: Due to massive re-girdering Programme on Central Railway, a major re-modelling of the Workshop was undertaken. A new Template Shop for fabrication of 76.2 m span Open Web Girders and a Points & Crossing Shop was added.
1979 to 1994: The Workshop was functioning in a small shed till 1979. The new covered accommodation was provided during the year 1979 to 1994. The total covered area of the Workshop is now about 21,000 Sq. M.
1981-82: the fabrication of welded plate girders of 12.2 m span was started. The Workshop is now engaged in the regular production of welded girders up to 30.5m spans.
1989-1994: Modernization of Central Engineering Workshop, Manmad was started in 1989 and completed in 1994 during which the entire handling system of Workshop has been switched over from ordinary rail mounted cranes to electric over head cranes. Due to modernization, it was possible to manufacture 3/122m through spans (Welded type) for K.R.C.L.
2009-10: 12.2 m & 18.3 m 25 T. loading standard and 18.3 m DFC loading standard welded girder fabrication started. Similarly, fabrication of 45.7 m Open web Girder for 25T loading started in 2009-10.

This is supporting shop of Central Engineering Workshop, MMR and meant for inspection and repairs of tools, plants and machineries installed in various production Shops.
2. Production Control Organization (P.C.O.):
Central Engineering Workshop has Production Control Organization headed by Sr.SE (PCO). The main function of this Organization is to check and maintain quality, review progress, monitor and closing of work orders, requirement of raw materials and assist to RDSO official for inspection as laid down.
3. Chemical and Metallurgical Laboratory:
Chemical & Metallurgical Laboratory has been established in Central Engineering Workshop for carrying out destructive as well as non-destructive tests of raw materials as well as inspection of quality to check technical specifications as per standards.
The Laboratory is equipped with inverted microscope, universal testing machine, X-ray machine for radiography testing, Optical Emission Spectrometer for chemical composition analysis, Macro & Micro examination, ultrasonic inspection, dye penetration test etc.
In accordance with the instructions from Railway Board and RDSO, a Bridge inspection cell for Central Railway has been constituted in the Workshop under the overall control of CBE, C. Rly. This inspection team undertakes the inspection of the girders fabricated in the workshop which was earlier done by RDSO.
1965: The first 76.2 m Open Web Girder was fabricated by the workshop regirdering of Yamuna Bridge at Kalpi on JHS-Kanpur Section
1972: 2 Nos of 30.5 m span were fabricated and supplied to Bangladesh.
1975: The workshop fabricated microwave towers for our own Railway
1981-82: The first welded girder was fabricated in the workshop. Since then, the workshop has crossed the production of 5000 MT mark of welded Plate girders and hence RDSO LKO has authorized the workshop to carry out in-house inspection as per Railway Board Directives.
1993-94: The work of Konkan Railway was targeted work of Railway Board. The work was undertaken by CE Workshop, Manmad for fabrication of 3/122.32 m through spans within record time of 11 months. The girders have been successfully erected on the river Mandovi Zuari near Goa.
2005: Special Diamond Crossings for BSL and NGP Yard, due to which the speed restrictions could be eliminated were fabricated in the workshop. For this, the workshop was awarded by Member Engineering.
2019: Due to heavy rainfall during monsoon, due to settlement of bank behind abutment in Lonavala - Karjat section Bridge No. 117/1 (Viaduct No.6) had caused disruption in traffic for more than 2 months. CE Workshop, Manmad fabricated and supplied the required girders within record time due to which the traffic got reinstated.
